VHS-filmer er basert på magnetbånd som ikke varer evig, og nå som disse filmene er blitt 30-40 år gamle ser man at filmene begynner å svikte og slutte å virke. Privatpersoner må derfor bevare disse digitalt på samme måte som tegneseriesamlere lagrer tegneserier i syrefrie plastlommer, eller kunstsamlere konserverer kunstverkene sine gjennom f. eks. rensing og retusjering.
